隱喻同明喻一樣，也是在兩個不同類事物之間進行比較。不同的是明喻把本體和喻體說成是“相似的”，而隱喻則干脆把兩者說成是“一致的”。明喻中有比喻詞而隱喻中則沒有。
明喻 My love is like a red，red rose. 我的愛人像一朵紅玫瑰。 Peter is like a tiger. 彼得像一只老虎。
隱喻 My love is a red，red rose. 我的愛人是一朵紅玫瑰。 Peter is a tiger. 彼得是一只老虎。
下面是一些實例: The tree of
liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and
tyrants. 自由之樹必須時常用愛國者和暴君的鮮血來清洗。
