五月花號公約

1620年11月11日，經過在海上六十六天的漂泊之后，一艘名為“五月花”的大帆船向美洲陸地靠近。船上有一百零二名乘客。他們的目的地本是哈德遜河口地區，但由于海上風浪險惡，他們錯過了目標，于是就在現在的科德角外普羅溫斯頓港拋錨。為了建立一個大家都能受到約束的自治基礎，他們在上岸之前簽訂了一份公約，這份公約被稱為《“五月花號”公約》，簽署人立誓創立一個自治團體，這個團體是基于被管理者的同意而成立的，而且將依法而治。 這是美國歷史上第一份重要的政治文獻。

“以上帝的名義，阿門。

吾等紀念石頭簽約之人，信仰之捍衛者，蒙上帝恩佑的大不列顛、法蘭西及愛爾蘭國王詹姆斯陛下的忠順臣民----為了上帝的榮耀,為了吾王與基督信仰和榮譽的增進,吾等越海揚帆,以在弗吉尼亞北部開拓最初之殖民地,因此在上帝面前共同莊嚴立誓簽約,自愿結為一公民團體。為使上述目的得以順利進行、維持并發展，亦為將來能隨時制定和實施有益于本殖民地總體利益的一應公正和平等法律、法規、條令、憲章與公職，吾等全體保證遵守與服從。

據此于耶穌公元1620年11月11日，吾王英格蘭、法蘭西、愛爾蘭等十八世暨蘇格蘭第五十四世君主陛下在位之年，在科德角簽署姓名如下，以資證明。

In the name of God, Amen.五月花號公約We whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign Lord, King James, by the grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland king, defender of the faith, etc., having undertaken, for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith, and honor of our king and country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents solemnly and mutually in the presence of God, and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony, unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. ）

In witness whereof we have under subscribed our names at Cape-Cod the 11th of Novemben, ine the year of the reign of our sovereign lord, KING James, of England,France,and Ireland the eighteenth,and of Scotland the fifity-fourth.Anno Domini 1620.

《五月花號公約》是美國歷史上第一份政治性契約。

在整五月花號船個人類文明史上，它的意義幾乎可以與英國的《大憲章》、美國的《獨立宣言》、法國的《人權宣言》等文獻相媲美。美國幾百年的根基就建立在這短短的幾百字之上，信仰，自愿，自治，法律，法規……這些關鍵詞幾乎涵蓋了美國立國的基本原則，今天美國總統宣誓就職時依然是手按《圣經》，向全體公民保證遵從和信守憲法與法律。[1]
